She wasn?t sure she could face it, the looks of curiosity, the hushed comments, the pity she knew they would feel as she realized how broken she was. But the hunger was gnawing at her, and her boys had mostly stopped coming to check on her with morsels. She was sure she looked a mess her normally pristine pelt now matted and messy, once swollen belly sunken in from malnutrition and of course there was her eye, the left one, once bright amber now dulled and sightless. The area around the eye was also damaged, the fur around it still too short to hide the burned and damaged skin.
With a huff she finally rose to her paws and left her den in nearly two months, she had last eaten about ten days ago and even then it had only been a mouse, a tiny thing, all her son had deemed fit to bring her. All of her meals for the past month had been like that, no wonder she looked half-starved. Almost immediately she was disorientated, not yet used to the lack of depth she had once taken for granted. Her eye was burning, it always did day and night a constant reminder of the injury she had received.
She wanted to run and hide, to disappear forever from the world beyond the den. That was quickly put to bed though as her stomach growled loudly and she groaned, the hunger pain was just bad enough to trump her need to flee.
