stirring the pot

The Tortuga throne room was such a dark and dingy place, vastly different from the home Seraphim had created for himself in the rock garden at the foot of the mountain. He enjoyed the open and clean air, but on the mountain the air was ashy and threatened to choke him. Nonetheless he was on his way toward the very place he was least thrilled to go. He needed to speak alone with the new queen, to see where he might stand now within the pack that he had never formally joined. Morphine's reign had been so brief and unorganized, he had never been sure what his place was.
His feet fell lightly over the ground as he wound his way up the rocky surface, feeling the heat of the volcano beneath him. He wondered what all of his children were doing now - those biological he hadn't seen since his encounter with Morphine, and Devya had been absent for a few days. He prayed that no harm had befallen any of them, because of the many hopes he harbored for them all. He hoped to regain the love of his natural offspring and to form true relationships with them. For Devya, he hoped that this trip to the queen would provide her with solid footing to come of age on, for he sought a place in Tortuga that would serve her greater protection than he alone could.
The alabaster brute stopped just short of entering the throne room itself, uncomfortable with its atmosphere. He glanced around him with narrowed eyes before calling for the queen to meet him at last.
