It was another typical day for Dhiren in Ludicael. He had woken up with his sisters surrounding him, as if they were his physical barriers from the outside world. Instead of being annoyed at being trapped between Novel and Lakota, he snuggled deeper into their warmth and had fallen asleep again until Song had woken them up. The morning had been normal - Cherokee had gone out to get breakfast, which was different almost every day. That morning, it had been rabbit, and Dhiren had taken to it like a duck on water. His belly was full and then he was eager to see what the day had to offer him.
He figured that just laying around and waiting for something to happen was pointless. So, after his food had settled and energy was regained, he went out to search for his father. Cherokee had said something about going out patrolling later, but Dhiren secretly hoped that he hadn't left yet. Little paws carried him away from Song and his sisters, but not too far that he couldn't quickly return. Bi-colored eyes scanned the green and light gold foliage that surrounded the area their den was located at, hoping to see a large amount of black standing out. No such luck, so he did what any pup would do: howl.
Dhiren's howl was still developing, explaining the high-pitched noise that left his lips. He hoped his daddy would hear him and immediately come to him. Once his howl ceased, Dhiren eagerly looked around, keeping eyes out for any sign of his dad.

The pups were growing up much more quickly than he had every imagined. All five had nearly doubled in size and the only boy Dhiren was already much bigger than of his sisters. Today had started out just like any other day in Ludi. The pups had slept in pretty late until Song had decided to wake the little ones up, the ebony man having brought them rabbit for breakfast. They had all taken very well to it, especially Dhiren. He couldn't get enough of it. While the children ate, Cherokee had decided to heat out for a little bit to patrol the borders some, just to make sure there were no lingering rogues or new members needing to be accepted. His Sol Jupiter had entrusted him and his wife to take care of new members now and he wasn't about to let the queen down.

He'd barely gone out not even five minutes when a piercing wail erupted into the atmosphere, the voice familiar. Dhiren. His little man was calling for him. Figuring he could always go patrol later on in the day, Cherokee turned back around, a gentle smile curling his dark lips as he trotted back towards the den, bi-colored gaze coming across his mini-me's familiar figure. He padded towards his sun, bumping the tiny creature with the bridge of his muzzle, smiling down at him. Something wrong Dhiren? A hint of concern clouded his silvery and ivory emerald eyes, wondering if his son was alright.

Dhiren hadn't been timing his father, but if he had been, he would have been very impressed at how fast Cherokee had responded to his cry. With his father in front of him, Dhiren's little tail behind to wag across the ground as he was sitting on his tiny haunches. "Nothing's wrong, Daddy. I just missed you, that's all." His bi-colored eyes were lit with a question, one that was dying to be let loose from the pup's little chest. How would he word it, though?
The black and white pup continued to hold the gaze he shared with his father. Were dads mind readers? Dhiren didn't know. If they were, then he wouldn't have to worry about asking and Cherokee wouldn't have to worry about extracting it from his one and only son. However, the situation would not be hard for either one, so Dhiren easily let his inquiry slip. "I called you because..." he looked down at his front paws, shyly shuffling them around in the dirt as he bravely asked, "I wanted to spend some time with you..."
He raised his small head, eyes burning with not just the question, but a desire to meet the standards his father had set when he was born. Dhiren wanted to be like his daddy! With that in mind, he continued from where his words had faded and said, "Daddy, can I go patrolling with you?" It was a bold question - in the pup's eyes, anyway - and he waited with bated breath for his father's response.

His bi-colored gaze ran over Dhiren's tiny body, examining it for any physical injuries. There were none visible as far as he was concerned, so if there was something wrong, then clearly it had nothing to do with his physical body. The pup's tiny tail wagged as he looked up at his father, stating that he had simply missed him, that was all. I missed you too little man. Cherokee chuckled, amused at his son's blatant honesty, leaning down to lick down the top of his head, nuzzling the tiny lad. As he pulled back, he could see the boy's dual colored eyes light up with some hidden question. The ebony man would not prod his son, merely wait until the child presented the question. And he didn't have to wait long.

I called you because...I wanted to spend some time with you... The man's feature softened a considerate amount, bi-colored eyes gleaming with affection towards his only son. That was just beyond tender. His heart swelled with unbridled love, ivory and ebony ears rotating forward with attention as Dhiren asked him if he could come along with him on a patrol. A wide grin split Cherokee's dark lips, his own tail wagging behind him. Of course you can Dhiren, you can come any time that you want. He chuckled, beginning to turn around as he motioned for his son to follow him, knowing that the questions wouldn't end there.

His excitement was evident in the way he physically responded. Dhiren's ears perked and his eyes started to shimmer in eager delight as he rose from his perched position on the ground. After standing, Dhiren couldn't help but turn into a circle, barking happily at his father. His little tail wagged so fast, it looked like a blur as he happily jumped up to try and reach his dad's face. Instead, he grabbed a bit of his leg fur and playfully tugged at it, growling at the same time. He was going to spend time with his daddy!
Dhiren felt like the luckiest puppy in the world just then. Who else could say that Cherokee was their daddy? Aside from his sisters, he was the only son, so he had sole dibs on this! "SCORE!" He yelped, eyes dancing with happiness as he saw the motions Cherokee made to urge him to follow. Dhiren didn't hesitate with his own actions and he put on a surge of speed to get right next to his father's long legs. Instead of stopping, though, Dhiren aimed like a little black bullet for the low hanging foliage in front of him. He crashed through the bush, making branches crack and leaves rustle before falling from the impact. He made an "OOMPH" sound before walking back through the small hole he had made in the shrubbery. Leaves and a branch or two stuck out from his fur and he looked up at Cherokee with quivering eyes.
"Let's go, Daddy!" He exclaimed, not even phased by the impact he had made to the piece of herbage. Dhiren waited for his daddy to take the long strides past him and then he eagerly followed. "What we gonna do today?"

Dhiren couldn't contain or even hide his excitement and it didn't seem like he was trying to contain anyway. Cherokee's little mini-me perked his little ears, similarly mismatched eyes dancing with delight as he rose to his tiny paws, turning around in an excited circle barking happily. An amused chuckle rumbled in the man's ebony chest as he watched his only son jump up at his face, trying to reach it and obviously failing due to the significant amount of height difference. So instead of his father's face, the boy went to grab a foreleg, pulling at the fur attached to it, growling playfully. He promptly released his father, who shook his leg to lessen the throbbing that had arisen because of his son's bite, taking the boy's antics all in stride.

At motioning for him to follow, Dhiren took off like a little speeding bullet, rocketing past Cherokee and into a nearby brush of foliage, crashing through the greenery and hidden branches on the other side, a loud oomph echoing from where Dhiren had been. The large ebony man rushed towards the foliage, dark brows furrowing together as he looked for the boy's tiny figure, a grown tugging at his lips when Dhiren resurfaced, pieces of branches protruding from his dark pelt. The frown soon disappeared and turned once again into amusement as his son told him to keep on going, never forgetting to ask what the plan for the day was. Cherokee smiled, leaning down to pull the protruding roots from Dhiren's pelt before answering his question. Just patrolling. We're going to walking around all of our home, looking for wolves who want to live here. He tried explaining his duty to the boy in the simplest of terms with the least amount of confusion.

Dhiren listened to his father, catching and holding onto every word like they were precious stones. It was obvious the boy looked up to Cherokee, he had no reason to deny that he did. After all, he was the one who helped Song give him life! The pup was still unsure as to how, but he knew that they loved each other a lot and from that love came him and his four sisters. The only downside to being the only boy born in a liter with four girls was that he was the only one. Being with Cherokee by himself was definitely a rare treat, so he milked it for all its worth.
So, with great care, Dhiren made sure to understand what Cherokee was saying about their task for the morning. "So...we're like the guards for Ludi-Ludi-for our pack?" He immediately gave up on the long word, intending on working on it later. "We make sure that everything is safe and if something looks wrong, we tell the big boss?" Dhiren had no idea whom the Sol was for their pack, but he assumed they were nice. After all, if the big boss wasn't nice, why would he be living there? Being able to do such a thing with his daddy made Dhiren even happier. "I can't wait to see if anything new pops up, Daddy!" He exclaimed, eyes holding the same type of fire that was spoken is his words. "What kind of stuff is new, anyway?"

He felt bad for his son sometimes. Dhiren was the only male that was born to him and his wife and he was surrounded by estrogen all the time. He honestly didn't know how his little champ made it through living with all his sister. Cherokee applauded his son for it though, he was a brave little guy for handling so much female. And not only that, but he got along well with his sisters. The girls weren't excluding him for any reason, something which the onyx man was very glad of. He wouldn't want his children to exclude each other for any reason.

So...we're like the guards for Ludi-Ludi-for our pack? We make sure that everything is safe and if something looks wrong, we tell the big boss? Cherokee nodded at his son, a proud grin splitting his lips, surprised that his boy was able to catch on so quickly. That's exactly right Dhiren. We protect our home from bad wolves. And yes, if something is really bad, then we tell the big boss, but it's not, then we can take care of it. The boy was a lot quicker than he would've anticipated but he was glad, that meant that he wouldn't have any trouble learning how to navigate the real world once it was his turn to go out and face it. I can't wait to see if anything new pops up, Daddy! What kind of stuff is new, anyway? He was glad that he had been able to spend some time with his only son, he only knew the boy needed some quality time with the only other male in his life. Well, there usually isn't much. The only thing new thing that we could find would be a new wolf who wants to live here. He shrugged towards his son, unable to come up with a better answer. His routine patrols hardly came up with anything remotely interesting.

Dhiren couldn't help but keep his gaze upward to his father's face. He wanted to watch Cherokee's every move, including every facial expression he made as he spoke. The boy looked up to his father, and it was because of this that he acted so interested. It wasn't a put-on; the boy didn't even know what that was. He did love spending time with both parents, but there was something about being with his daddy that made it even more special.
He assumed it was the man-to-man time they shared. Dhiren mentally decided that, and he took in the words that his father spoke. "That sounds like a good job, Daddy," he said. "I wonder if it will get better the older I get. What is it like to be a grown-up man?" Dhiren had a lot to learn until then and he wanted to know that he was doing everything right then.
The young pup broke his admiring gaze from his father's face and looked out to the stretching scenery in front of them. He tried to remember every tree, rock, and bits of grass that made up the borders of Ludicael. Dhiren would probably have them memorized by heart after a few more trips with Cherokee, so he started remembering by taking in the scents and the parts of the woods that they passed. "If we find anyone today, we will be sure to help them!" He made sure to emphasize the 'we's, wanting to prove that he was thinking of his father in his actions.

It was a refreshing feeling to be out with his little man, just the two of them. Don't get him wrong, he loved spending time with his darling little angel and all of their little girls, but sometimes being around so much estrogen got to be too much. So times like this that he got to spend with his only boy were treasured and greatly appreciated. He liked spending time alone with Dhiren, bonding with his son. Cherokee was trying to be the best father that he could and he hoped that he was doing a good job. He didn't want to disappoint his children or let them down. He wasn't sure he could stand letting them down.

But it seemed so far he was doing a good job. Or so he hoped. That sounds like a good job, Daddy. I wonder if it will get better the older I get. What is it like to be a grown-up man? A smile creased his ebony lips as the two continued to move along the border, mismatched ivory jade and silver gaze scanning the territory, audits flickering to and fro, listening for any sound of an approaching figure. Well son, sometimes being a grown-up man isn't fun. If you live in a pack, you have responsibility. A job. There are many other wolves that live with you and you have to take care of them too. Look out for them, hunt with them. When you become a grown up man Dhiren, you realize that the world is a big place with lots of new things to discover. The dark man would trail off, not wanting to go into detail. His son was still young, he didn't need to know how horrible this world could be sometimes. Not yet at least.

The two continued on, still not running into anyone else, as usual. Sometimes these border patrols got really boring and tedious, but they were necessary in order to ensure the safety of Ludicael. Jupiter had trusted him with a new rank and he would not let his sol down. If we find anyone today, we will be sure to help them! Cherokee would glance down at his son, smiling as he nodded in agreement. They surely would. If they ever ran into anyone that is.

The way Cherokee described the life of a grown-up man was definitely intriguing for the young pup. There was so much to learn, so much to prove to the world - as well as the other members of his pack - that it was a possibility Dhiren would be overwhelmed by it all. Responsibility was something the five-month-old wasn't aware of yet. All he knew was that he had to make sure his sisters were safe, his mother had the protection she needed, and that he was not allowed to wander off on his own without letting either parent know. Such as the life of a young one. If only he knew how swell his life was.
The future danced far away in front of Dhiren's bi-colored orbs. He didn't know what was ahead, but he was definitely curious. The words that were spoken from his father rang in his ears and he took them to heart. At that moment, from being so enthralled, Dhiren didn't watch where he was stepping. His little paws stepped over a few random branches that had fallen from the trees around them, making him look as if he had sticky sap on his soles. Dhiren didn't really mind how he looked, though. If he got a laugh from his father, it would only make it better.
"All of that sounds like it should be given to the right person, Daddy," he said. "I hope that I can learn how to do all of that in the future." It was a hope that burned in his chest, even though he knew that it would take time and experience. What better time to try and learn some of it by simply spending time with his father?
