the usefulness of this uselessness

He listened to his mother's words of encouragement and praise and cast about for something to put in the little vessel to further cement its purpose in existence. He found a long-ish bullrush and a pampas grass and chewed their stems down just enough that they would be supported upright in the vase. He was most impressed when it didn't tip clear over. Perhaps he had done better than he thought in the construction of this one. Now that it was done though, he wasn't quite sure what to do with it? Perhaps he would take it to the treehouse and tuck it away somewhere near the hearth (not close enough to burn of course, he really enjoyed being in the trees).
