Erik hadn't been around for the pups as much as he likely should have. Viking boy, Archer boy-- a double dose of roaming in his blood. He's sorry. No, really. Making an effort and all that. After seeking out Kiriko offer to work with the kids and getting an assignment, he actually had to figure out what to do with a kid too. It had taken exactly one reminder from Tate that they could just spar, and Erik's concerns dissolved.

Sending his cat off to retrieve the assigned child, Erik busied himself. Clearing the area, tucking away the implements they wouldn't need. Really, he didn't know how much the pups knew yet, and where they were starting. Hell, he was a defensive menace himself, not so much an offensive fighter. A spar like this could be good for him too, even if it was up against one of the kids. Practice is practice? Sure. All he had to do was wait.

Kina was learning a lot by sparring her siblings, but now she wished to learn from sparring others, regardless of age and size. She was bruised and sore, but ready for more. After speaking with her mother it was decided she would train with one of the yearlings of pack. A young warrior named Erik. She prepared herself, stretching in the morning sun until she was summoned by one of the yearling's companions.

Kina followed the cat to the training area where a dark-pelted youth was waiting for her. She paused and bowed deeply in greeting before entering the sparring area. "My name is Hattori Kina. Mother said you were available to spar with me?" She hoped to get his name in return then get right down to business, though already she could feel nerves tumbling in her stomach. He was much bigger than her siblings and though she was tall for her age this young man towered above her. How was she to fight someone so much larger?

Speech

She's prompt, something Erik can appreciate. The boy offered the girl a dip of his muzzle before remembering he should be more formal and greeting her properly, a kindness that could nearly be a smile around the edges of his lips and eyes. While the yearling is strange, he remains gentle with the child. There were nerves about the girl, and Erik couldn't blame her. The man starts off setting a strong example, modeling confident steps, setting up across the training ring from the girl.

The talking was the hard part, but he supposed his cat would chime in if she really had to. "Erik Archer," the introduction comes. His voice is gravelly, crackling in his throat, rough. Speaking feels like sandpaper, but that's okay. He doesn't need it to fight. As for the spar, Erik just gave a nod. Easier this way.

Dipping his head low, the yearling invited Kina to make the first move. Standing opposite her within the training ring, comfortable distance between them. A little smile... friendly. Erik was trying.

The young man introduced himself as Erik Archer and then said little else. That didn't bother Kina. Her father and many of her siblings were not prone to long conversations. They got right to the point and she expected nothing more. He dipped his head, setting his stance and she took the nod to indicate that she was to go first. Kina took a deep breath and set her defenses. She'd learn many over her many spars. Her ears pinned to her head, tail tucking as her shoulders rolled forward and her neck scrunched back. She evened her stance, legs coiling before she leap toward her opponent.

Kina would not risk a head on attack, instead when she got close she dipped to her left, charging for the man's back right leg. He little head rotated, teeth aiming to grab hold of his right ankle.

Conversation among the Bamboo could be hard to come by, that was true. Erik was grateful for it. Less isolating that way. It doesn't stop the warmth. Well, warmth first. Then there's the joy that comes with a spar. Even if this was practice, and he was working with the pups, the more practice he gets the better he has to get... right? Erik is certain that's how it works.

The pup charges, but is smart enough to feint left and grab for his ankle. Good. He comes alive, feeling her teeth tag the tender flesh as he rounds. Larger, bulkier, slower-- that's okay. The bruiser wrenched his leg free of her grasp, sweeping for her outer hind leg with his foreleg as he rounds. Trying to knock her feet from beneath her, but hopefully slowly enough that it won't catch her too hard, too off guard. If he can help it, the yearling would try to stick close to his smaller (and slipperier) opponent.

Kina's fangs found purchase and in her surprise at the successful attack she failed to realize it had been part of a ploy. For with her head angled as it was she could not see the yearling's leg come sweeping for her. Without a moment's notice his superior strength pulled his leg free from her grasp and his foreleg swept the feet out from under her. She yelped, but just as she had against Kaizen she immediately attempted to retaliate. Her body twisting into a little 'c' as her fangs tried to grab the paw that had just cost her her balance. She kept her tail tucked tight against her abdomen, her hind legs already in motion to try and right herself.

Though she does need to learn, Erik feels a bit guilty hearing her yelp. Right, pain is an excellent teacher and all that. He knows. Better he be doing it than some dickhead yearling that was actually trying to mess the kids up. Right. They're learning. They were all learning.

Erik is reminded at once, he is learning too. Sharp puppy teeth in his paw, a hiss of breath. As the girl fought to regain her balance, Erik pushed forward. It's his attempt to bowl the little pup over, granted she's already tucked up and hopefully prepared to land safely. The viking bastard isn't out to traumatize anyone, not today at least. Not Kina. He's careful as he spars with the girl, not wanting to cause undue harm. She's just learning. There's plenty of time for harm later.
