With a bundle of fine twigs in his mouth, Hattori dusted off the tatami mat flooring of the training area. For the most part, everyone cleaned up after themselves in Tojo, but with the changing of seasons meant there was more rain and mess in general. When the weather was at its worst, they would roll up the mats and store them somewhere dry and in the process they sometimes got a little dusty. Nothing that a bit of sweeping could not handle. And perhaps one might have assumed Hattori would think such a task was below him, but maintaining the training area and its equipment was an important part of the process.

At least he thought so.

Putting the broom to the side, he tilted his head back and let out an offer for his children. Whoever wished to train with him ought to come now, for he had the time and energy to spare.

Fog rolled into Tojo as the morning sun attempted to rise, its light fracturing amongst the bamboo and further dulled by the fog. It was humid and chilly out. Kina snuggled into the furs of their den but knew it was expected that she get up. Already her father had left, no doubt tending to the training area for the days activities. Kina stretched and rolled to her feet trying to blink the sleep out of her eyes before she slipped out of the den and toward the stream for a drink. As she took her first sip she heard her father call for the pups for a training lesson. Ah, right on time. Kina swiftly finished her drink, feeling a bit more awake though a little chillier before she headed over to where her father had summoned them. She arrived and dipped her head low in respectful greeting. "Good morning, father."

Speech

"Good morning." He greeted with about as much warmth as a man like him could muster. Hattori didn't recall his last litter growing as quickly as these, though still relatively small he could already tell many of them would be about as tall as he was. It was all in the gangly length of their limbs, paws too big for their smaller frames. Kina in particular would no doubt be tall and from what he'd observed she already had a natural talent to her, a sharp mind and capable fighting skills. But perhaps as her Father he was just biased, he didn't dwell on it too much.

"Spar with me." Was his gentle order, his tail flicking as he offered her the first mover.

Kina was not at all surprised that her father wished to spar. It would either be a spar or a lesson, but she was excited it was a spar. After practicing with her siblings she was eager to show her father what she could do. Kina pinned her ears to her head and tucked her tail. Her fur and hackles stood on end. Her lefts coiled, her neck scrunching back. When it seemed her father was ready she sprang toward him. He was far taller than her so she focused on the joins she could reach. Kina bounded to her left, seeking to slide down her father's right side with her jaws open and ready to latch onto her father's knee. She wasn't quite ready for multiple attacks, though she was sure her father would have advice for her after their spar.

Though young, his daughter acted decisively, didn't worry or fuss about what she ought to do. Just focused, took a moment to tuck her extremities and rushed into the fray. A good start, if he'd seen one. Hattori had high expectations of course, this litter wasn't exempt even if he really ought to give more leeway, but he wasn't entirely unreasonable. Talented as she may be, she had so much to learn and with the way things were progressing he trusted that she would in time.

He shifted as he adjusted his own posture, shoulders tensing, neck angling lower to offer her a warning snap as she passed by. The knee was a good spot to aim for, uncomfortable at best, and it could easily inhibit his movement, making retaliation difficult. Raising his leg up to move his knee out of reach, he refrained from swatting at her with his paw, knowing full well with talons like his he had to take extra care not to scratch too deep. Or at all, when it came to his children at their current age. Instead, he doubled down on his earlier bite, this time intent on making a grab for the back of her neck. Like a bird of prey swooping down on an unsuspecting rabbit.

Kina kept her movements lose, trying to be ready to react. She instinctively lowered her he head as she caught her father's jaws out of the corner of her perceptive little eyes, hearing the snap over air. She made a mental note to analyze this later, but for now her focus was on her target… which moved. Kina didn't bother to slow her momentum, instead changing her attack, for as her father lifted his leg he gave her access to his belly. If she could be fast enough not to get squished. Kina pivoted sharply in toward her father but she wasn't fast enough. Before she could slide under him his fangs found purchase in her scruff. Kina yelped in surprise but immediately reacted. She twisted, hind legs kicking out as she tried to catch her father's throat with them.

Hattori grunted as he raised her up, felt her twist in his grip and his pale brows furrowed in concern. He was making a pointed effort not to grip too tightly, he didn't want to rip anything, but thankfully the fur on the back of her neck was loose for this very reason. He was glad to see his little one wasn't going down without a fight, her hind legs kicked out, pressing uncomfortably against the soft spot of his throat. A good target if he'd ever seen one. He took one hit, wincing slightly, before he moved to push her down against the matt beneath their paws. Easier said than gone given she was squirming all the while, to the extent he even considered she might slip free.
