POTS

Pots. People needed pots. Not only did people need pots, sometimes Star felt like doing something with her paws. It was therapeutic and she quite enjoyed the process. Having brought some supplies with her to this barren landscape, the Dunamis fae was ready to get to work. She chose a piece of land that seemed somewhat sturdy, then settled down to digging. She dug a hole in the side of one hardened hill, using a stick to create a little chimney. She then lined the hole with wood and started a fire.
In a land where the hills churned up deeper swaths of earth, it was easy to find clay which would be good for pots. The striped fae began to move between the hills, cyan eyes on the lookout for veins of clay. The woman's tasmanian devil gave a little snarl to alert her that someone else was nearby and Star stopped, turning her attention to the one approaching.

Where had her sister gone, anyway? At first Jay found herself making excuses for her absence, imagining she must be off on some adventure.... maybe she was off looking for more flowers to help grind into dyes for her paints, or maybe she wanted to help get some insight into the strange happenings lately. Either way, at first her brief absence didn't seem suspicious. They were older now, after all, though her sister being gone made Jay feel more like a child than ever. She decided to scour the lands immediately close to Avalon's lands for any sign of her. Not quite jumping to feeling panicked yet, but certainly worrying, she trekked over the barren hills carefully. Her nose flared, testing the scents of this place, but there were no signs of Finch anywhere here. Maybe someone might know something? It was a foolish thought, but one she couldn't help but think about when the scent of a stranger reached her nose. Trailing after it, she slowed when she saw someone nosing around, possibly looking for something. Jay's tail gave a slow wag behind her and she lifted her head, giving a soft bark of greeting. Her pose, friendly and relaxed, was consistent as she took a few steps closer. "Hello there! Looking for something?" Maybe she could help? Probably not, but Jay couldn't help but offer regardless. |

Dundee gave a snarl as only a devil can when the earthen fae came close and Star shushed him lightly. "It's fine," she told him. Both he and her falcon were used to warning her in advance of approaching wolves and Dundee in particular liked to keep them away from her. She didn't think this woman, who seemed so friendly, would want to touch her for any reason.
The fae asked what she was looking for and Star's cyan gaze cut back to the rolling, barren hills. "Looking for veins of clay to make pots with," she informed the woman. "The name is Star, by the way." She introduced herself with a smile, then motioned for the woman to come along.
There were stripes in the land from time and erosion. Many different textures and colors rippled across the land. "There we go," she pointed out a stretch of greyish blue. Moving to it, Star began collecting the clay with scrapes of her claws. Dundee had a little bucket between his sharp, pointy teeth and he carried the clay back to where the wood burned in the makeshift kiln.

Jay startled slightly at the tasmanian devil's snarl, making as if to retreat immediately. She wasn't much of a fighter, after all; imagining herself making someone uncomfortable was enough to kill her mood, but the stranger quickly brushed him off. Her posture slackened slightly, a polite smile beginning to creep across her face. "I'm Jay! Jay Destruction," she introduced herself without hesitation. Her tail gave a little wag to accompany her words. "That sounds interesting- mind if I watch? I can help, too," she suggested. She was thinking of her sister again and the little projects they'd started together, and mentally she was already filing away the steps of what Star was doing, just in case in proved useful to bring back home. They had plenty of old containers stowed away in the barns, but maybe these could have a use too... Jay chewed on her lip as she watched, keeping a respectful distance- and occasionally letting her gaze flick to Dundee, not wanting to catch the little companion's wrath again. |

The other wolf introduced herself as Jay and Star smiled and nodded. "Good to meet you, Jay." The earthe fae then asked if she could help and Star nodded again. "Of course. Let me show you how it's done and we can both make a few." Dundee had already drug the pail towards the kiln, a furrow in the dirt were the pot had been pulled along. He was strong, but he wasn't tall enough to keep the pail from dragging the ground.
Star padded back along the barren landscape, blue eyes peeled for any other interesting veins in the surrounding hills. She imagined there would be quite a few treasures buried within, but she didn't have the time nor the desire to scrape them out of the earth. The dry earth crumbled under paw, sending up little puffs of dust like smoke signals. She wondered what this place would look like after a good rain.
Settling down beside the pot of blue clay, Star unearthed a second pail that contained water. She showed Jay how to dip her paws in the water, then use the wet appendages to gently mold the clay into the shape of a vessel. "It's not too difficult to form the clay. The hard part will be to get it to set right in the fire," she spoke from experience. Many a decent looking pot had broken and cracked within the heat the of the flames.
Star crafted several smaller crocks and two larger ones. Blue eyes kept glancing towards Jay, offering advice where she could. Once the pile of clay had been used up, Star used a stick to push the pieces onto the big, flat stone at the bottom of the kiln. "Now we wait to see if our hard work paid off or if we have to try again."

The other woman didn't shoo her away, and Jay's smile only brightened even further. "Oh, thank you!" She chirped, gratitude nearly oozing out of her. Not the type to take anyone's kindness for granted, she was overjoyed that this new acquaintance didn't mind giving her an impromptu little lesson... she only wished she had something to offer her in return. Nodding along, she moved alongside Star, giving the woman she didn't know well a respectful amount of space while also trying to keep an eye on what she was doing. If Jay was good at anything, it was listening and following along. She followed her lead and used her paws, wetting them and then using them to mold the clay. Her paws felt clumsy trying to mirror Star's own more skilled motions, but she succeeded in making something that vaguely resembled a container. Sorta. It took her just as long as it took Star to make multiple, but she was happy just the same. Her head cocked to the side as she studied it, wondering what she could use such a thing for. Maybe something to hold materials for making pigments for paint? There were plenty of old containers strewn about Avalon's lands, but having options was always a good idea. Maybe something like this would make a good gift for her sister.. Jay mused over it while she explained the main difficulty was in setting it over the fire. She nodded, showing she understood. Helping push her own creation into the makeshift kiln, she sat back and watched the process, looking quite pleased with herself. "So.. how long does this part take?" As much as she preferred instant gratification, she knew crafting didn't really work like that. An exercise in patient wouldn't be such a bad thing. |

Pots were made and placed into the kiln. They had only to wait. Jay asked how long they'd have to do so and Starchild gave a little shrug. "It's different for each batch," she began, sliding down to lay on her belly. "The thicker the clay, the longer it takes. If you keep them in too long though, then they crack and your efforts are wasted." A little laugh pulled from the striped fae and she shook her head. "It's kind of a pain, but containers are necessary to hold certain things. Healers especially find them valuable." Star wasn't a healer, but she could trade the pots for things that she found valuable.
Time passed and Star checked the pots now and then, poking the bases with a little stick. Periodically she would slide another piece of wood or two within to maintain the temperature. In time, she felt that the smaller pots were ready. With a Y-shaped stick, she gently maneuvered the pottery out of the kiln and onto a flattish stone. "Now we wait for them to cool and hope that they don't cool too fast. That can make them crack or shatter. The bigger one has a little longer to go."
With the smaller pots out and cooling, Star looked back to Jay. "So, did you think you were going to make pots today?" The fae chuckled, a gentle smile on her maw.
