Paws slowly pull Unagi through the Steppes, her mind firmly in the present for once… if only for a little bit. Life is for the living and she keeps trying to remind herself of that fact as she attempts to keep her wandering thoughts from straying back to the absent family member that never again greet her. The sound of heavy paws pounding the earth pull her mind from its downward spiral and she lifts her head to find one of her grandfather’s pups, charging a small pack of coyotes.

Cursing inwardly, she charges along the lip that the land naturally creates, toward the two that have started to descend the short incline toward the pup and overwhelmed coyote. With a throaty growl, Unagi barrels into the closest one, her thick frame sending it sprawling away without so much as slowing her… which is useful because it allows her to reach the second coyote and grab ahold of its scruff to keep it off the headstrong pup.

The one she had knocked senseless recovers quickly and races back to her, biting at one of her back legs as she forcefully pulls the one she has ahold of away from the pup. Another, threatening growl rolls around the scruff in Unagi’s maw as pain flares to life in her hind leg.
