Oath had stayed close to Fairytale, his body wrapped protectively around hers, his ears twitching at every small sound in the prairie. Her exhausted form had slipped into fitful sleep, and he watched her with an unwavering gaze, concern etched deeply into his face. Every twitch, every muffled growl or snarl, made his chest tighten. He could see the toll her journey had taken, the way her dreams dragged her back into the horrors she'd endured. He pressed his muzzle gently against her head, whispering softly, “It’s just a dream, Fairy. You’re safe now.”
When her eyes snapped open with sudden alertness and she growled at the passing fox, Oath remained calm, speaking soothingly, “It’s alright, love. Just a fox. Nothing to fear.” He nuzzled her again, trying to ease her back into rest, though he could feel her trembling against him. Her nightmares were relentless, and he silently vowed to keep her safe from whatever had left her this shaken.
The sound of rapid pawsteps drew his attention, his head snapping up sharply as a tall figure charged toward them. His muscles tensed instinctively, his protective instincts flaring as he positioned himself between Fairytale and the incoming threat. But the familiar glint of Atreyu’s spotted coat came into view, and Oath immediately relaxed, though his ears remained slightly back, his concern not yet abated.
“Atreyu,” he greeted with a quick nod as she skidded to a halt. He stepped aside slightly to let her see Fairytale, his gaze flicking between the two. He listened intently to her words, his expression darkening at the mention of the sick caribou and Fairytale’s pursuit. His jaw tightened, but he kept his voice steady. “She’s been trembling and coughing. She’s weak, but she’s alive. I think she’s been through more than we know. She’s been trying to tell me, but her words…” He shook his head, glancing down at Fairytale with a soft, pained expression. “She’s so tired, Atreyu. She needs to get home.”
Atreyu’s suggestion to carry her brought a determined gleam to Oath’s cyan eyes. “I’ll carry her,” he said firmly, already stepping closer to gently maneuver Fairytale onto his back. “I don’t blame you, Atreyu. We’ve all done what we could, but now it’s my turn to get her back to safety.” His voice softened as he adjusted Fairytale’s small frame, making sure she was secure before rising to his full height. “You’re here now, and that’s what matters.”
With Fairytale on his back, he gave Atreyu a glance, his determination evident. “Lead the way. We’ll get her home together.” The protective glint in his eyes was unwavering as he prepared to follow Atreyu back to safety, his only focus on getting the love of his life the care she desperately needed.
