All of Ashen deemed quiet. Guards no longer stood outside of the tunneled cave holding the Russian servant. Their presence long forgotten in fading scents. Slowly being washed away by days that passed. Since her arrival, it seemed as if her services were rarely asked for. Most of her time used to learn English and study the schedules of those patrolling the grounds. Chesna had surely grown tired of these lands. Wishing to be free. Even if it were of a short duration. It was far better than being ignored for months to come.

She’d waited with patience until the moon sat low in the sky. Not yet reaching its peak to brighten up the night. It was then that paws carried her silently over the threshold of flowers. Treading lightly through those familiar stone walls until she could finally smell fresh air. The summer’s cool breeze swept gently across her face. Crinkling up her nose against the onslaught of scents she hasn’t realized were even there. How long had she been hidden away from life itself? The question sworn like bees inside of her mind as she pushed further. Cold pads meeting the warmth of fresh grass.

Chesna let her gaze take in her surroundings quite swiftly. Ensuring that no others would see her escape. It was only then did she break off. Blood pumped viscously with every single step. Pushing her body into a faster run. Branches stood no chance of stopping her. Rocks tried to trip the Russian sweetling; but to no avail. She didn’t stop until she could no longer smell the Ashen markings. From there, Chesna shot across the landscape unthinkingly. Gaze forever shifting from left and right. Ears straining to hear if anyone had chosen to followed. When no sound came, she finally came to rest. Chest heaving with every pant as she walked lazily to a cliff and plopped down out of exhaustion. The chains around her neck and front ankles feeling far more heavier than usual.

What once was a slave had become free. Tongue lounging just on the side of her open mouth, attention stared at the paw shaped lake below. The water calling for her to drink from its depths and calm down the ache of thirst. A journey she would soon take. For now, though, she chose to relax and calm the speeding beat of her heart.
