This wasn't very well planned

Thorn had made his way into this cave a while ago.  How long ‘a while’ was the blue wolf wasn’t sure anymore.  He’d been enjoying the strange fauna and then roaming farther into the darkness but was starting to realize that ‘a while’ could be a considerable portion of the day.  He’d entered when the sun was up high in the sky.  Was it a sun now or a moon that was in the sky?

A ways back in the cavern he’d seen plants and pools along with rodents but now he was in a spot where he could hardly see anything.  Thorn’s head turned to look back over his shoulder.  His nose told him where the scent of the walls were, and his paws informed him of the rocky ground where he stood.  Glancing up he couldn’t see the roof but his nose again could smell where the substance of rock was higher up.  He didn’t recognize some of the things he smelled in here and without light he wouldn’t get to see what the unknown was.  Guess he should have brought something in here to use as a light.  Lesson learned though a bit late.

Thorn stood still, thinking for a few moments and then scenting the air again.  He smelled fauna and water, not here but from back the way he’d come.  Time to go back to where he could use his eyesight and explore in the dark later when he’d rested, ate, and brought a fire with him.  Thorn took his time walking, testing his steps to make sure he didn’t trip over anything.  Eventually, his eyes were able to see the faint glow of pale light on the pool of water.  As he got closer dark shapes turned into lighter colors and eventually the green fauna.  He could smell the rate feces and the rats themselves roaming the area.

Spotting where the cave tilted he saw the entrance that would lead to his path out.  Next time he’d plan better before going into a cave.  He hadn’t respected the place enough and had paid for it with a shabby job at exploring.  Next time he’d make a map!  Light and supplies to make a map.  It would be time-consuming and completely worth it for a confusing area like this.  With that pleasant thought in mind, Thorn made his way to the cave exit.  
Thorn had been lost.  Hadn’t fully learned his way around but he had learned a good lesson from his failures.  That made the cave trek a success.
