Oleander gathered his example plants, just as his aunt Andromeda did in their lesson. The feathery-leafed Yarrow, the broad-leafed plantain, some narrow-leafed plantain, Hawksbeard and Dandelion stalk and leaves, and a stalk of the rigid horsetail were all laid out on a flat rock before him. Very prolific and easily found weeds that could always help in a pinch.

He also placed a bandage, a tin of St. John's Wort salve, and a small bottle of mead tincture infused with Willow Bark.

He called out to the pack, come any who wished to learn Field Medicine! Healing skills not required!

Seneca's ears twitched when he heard Ollie call out, his head tilting in curiosity. He waited, debated, and eventually decided to go see what was going on. When he arrived, he looked over everything that had been laid out, curiosity still plastered across his face. His eyes lifted to the pale wolf, offering a small smile. "Hey, Ollie! What ya doing?" Attention turned back to the items as he took a seat, tail flickering absent at his paws. "I don't think I've seen any of this kinda stuff before. Hope you don't mind me crashing!" His smile grew to a grin before he sat up straight, wanting to pay attention and be a good observer.

Field medicine was not something she'd ever been interested in before - healing in general was not really in her skillset - but she figured learning some practical skills was always a good idea, and she'd much rather be taught by one of her cousins than someone else. Making her way to where he had called from, she moved to sit and study what he had laid out before him. "You know I'm not really a healer but knowing the basics seems like a good idea," Tethys admitted, giving a nod of greeting to Seneca as well, a newer member of the Armada. She'd wait then, wondering if anyone else was planning to show up.

He heard the call and figured why not join. The scars along his shoulders were still healing; making hunting out of the question for now. Wanting to keep himself busy, Widler moves north from the Col toward the woods. Following the echo and scent of the boy named Oleander, he approaches to see another boy unknown to him and then the girl he had hunted bird with once before.

Surprise crosses his face as he sits beside Tethys, leaning over to whisper in her ear. “Didn’t think I’d see you again,” Wilder says under his voice before giving her quick grin. As his attention turns to Oleander, he looks at the items inquisitively.

“Not really into healing myself,” that much he could tell by the containers some of the items were held in. “Mind relating it to hunting or navigation so my pea brain can understand?” His small grin turns cheeky as he waits for Ollie to start his lesson.

Ollie waited, somewhat impatiently, for his first student to arrive. His tail swished behind him in excitement and nervousness as they each started appearing.
First was his new flatmate, Sen!
"Hey Sen!" He greeted, "I'll tell ya when a few more arrive, I'm grateful you're here!" He replied, trying desperately to keep his toes from dancing on the spot.
Next his twilight enshrouded cousin stepped in and admitted this wasn't her usual forte.
"Still glad you could join us, Tethys! I think you'll appreciate it." He said just as Wilder arrived and mentioned something to Tethys! Oooo, interesting! Did they know each other already? Excellent.

The new apprentice requested that he relate the lesson for something he could relate to.
"That's the idea, Wilder! Glad you could join! I'll get started." He said and straightened up.

"So, what you see here are several very common weeds that should be easy to find from the forested tip of Boreas to the southern tip of Auster and should be fairly prevalent everywhere in between. They grow in all kinds of conditions and are great to use when you're in a pinch. Let's say you're traveling or hunting far from here and you get into some trouble. Like, getting in a scrape with a cat, falling off a wall, or getting the unfortunate kick or bite from your prey. And you're far from anyone else who might hear your call to aid you. I want you to take careful stock of these herbs because they will all help keep you alive until you can get more experienced help, or just want to take care of a small annoyance by yourself."

He picked up the feathery leafed yarrow and presented it to his students to pass around.
"This one is called Yarrow. Note the fine feathery leaves and the bunch of small flowers on top. You should be able to identify this before it even starts flowering. This will save your life if you're ever in a place where you are bleeding badly. When you need to use it, crush whatever of the plant you can grab and stuff it into the bleeding wounds. Chewing it into a paste and spitting it into the wounds is best. It'll stop any excessive bleeding. And you can chew and swallow it even if you're also expelling blood from either end."

Then he picked up the rigid Horestail plant which could look similar but the feathery stalk was very different from the Yarrow and had no flowers. He gave it to his students to observe as well after taking the yarrow plant back.
"Here's the Horsetail plant. There are two types, one that grows close to marshes and one that grows in open dry fields. They look very similar to each other but it is important to know the difference when you're bleeding internally, or having a hard time peeing. You can eat the field horsetail for those problems without any issues but only use the marsh horsetail from the wet areas externally, like crushing into your wounds to stop wounds from bleeding. You can use both horsetails to stop bleeding externally. Questions so far?" He asked. Hoping it was becoming obvious to all of them how learning about these could be essential to their survival on expeditions away from home.

Truthfully Tethys hadn't expected to see the man she'd hunted grouse with again, though she supposed the north tended to be... well, different than some places. She'd noticed some of the wolves that lived around these lands often stayed in the far north for most of their lives, reluctant to leave. She sort of felt like that, too.

At first she looked a bit startled at someone leaning so close to whisper to her, but the surprise faded into something more like warmth, giving a slight nod of acknowledgment. "I didn't think so either," she admitted, though both of their attentions turned to Oleander and the lesson he had carefully prepared for them.

She followed along as best as she could, putting his words to mind - they could help when far from home with scrapes and cuts. Maybe those little injuries weren't emergency-level injuries, but patching them up could be useful, to stave off potential infection or worsening of things. That made sense to her. He passed around a bit of yarrow and she studied it thoughtfully, noting how different it looked from most other flowers she'd seen before.

"The flowers on yarrow are always white, or can they be different colors?" Tethys asked, genuinely curious and not just trying to show she was paying attention.

Horsetail came next, which wasn't so much a flower as what looked like a weed to her. When it was passed around she studied it more closely, knowing she might not be able to recognize it quite so easily as the yarrow. Passing it back, she shook her head, signifying she was ready for Oleander to continue on with his lesson.

Oleander begins to speak and quickly the words start to jumble in his head. The yarrow could be found all over? Not just one place? How? Why? Was it the dirt that mattered? He’d been to many different places around Boreas, a few in Auster, and had noticed that plants varied vastly from territory to territory. So what made this flowery plant so versatile? And apparently helpful?

Wilder’s brow furrows as he takes the horsetail to examine it. He brings it to his nose, inhaling deeply because when he’s out navigating, he depends much more on his sense of smell than his other senses. If he’s able to pick out their specific scent, he’ll be able to find it faster than relying on his eyes. A lot of plants were green like this one so mistaking it for something else wouldn’t be good.

“Does the yarrow change dependin’ on what territory yer in? Say I’m out at the plains or in the jungle, do I gotta look for a different type o’ yarrow? Or is it all the same?” Wilder questions as he hands the yarrow back before then picking up the horsetail to inspect it as well. This one looked more like a stick than a flowery plant, but if Oleander was saying it was useful, then he’d believe him.

(before her promotion)
Ignita was gathering kindling in the woods when she came across Ollie's little group. She sat in the back of the lesson and was interested to know more. She pulled herself forward and sat behind the others, in view of Oleander but the others may not have noticed her there.

She leaned in when the plants were passed around but didn't take any of them as part of the group. She perked her ears as the students asked interesting questions and she wondered if one day she could teach her own lessons! She had no idea the different plants, even if they looked similar, could have such constituents as stopping from bleeding out! That was some strong medicine.

Ollie perked his ears at the questions, first was Tethys, "They can different colors but the most potent is the white variety. They can come in pinks and reds but their abilities are somewhat weakened for some reason. They look very pretty though!" He said. Then turned to Wilder's question and noticed Ignite hovering behind them all.

"All of these plants, the yarrow, plantain, dandelion, hawksbeard, and horsetail will look exactly the same from one end of the continent to the other. They are very prolific and grow in all sorts of environments. As long as they have enough water, sunlight, and soil they'd grow out of stones! If they don't have this leaf shape, this flower shape, or this stalk, they're a different plant entirely and you shouldn't use it unless you know exactly what it is. There are some look alike plants that almost look like medicinal plants but are very poisonous, like poison hemlock and Queen Anne's Lace. They look very similar except for very specific differences."

He was definitely over prepared and wondered if they'd still be interested in the plantain and the other tools.

Wilder listens as intently as he can as Oleander speaks. Their white variety is the most potent and as long as they have all the same components, they're the same plant. Okay, he could get behind that. Easy, yes. Until the healer mentions that there is similar appearing plants that are very poisonous. His brow furrows again in confusion. Well, damn, how was he supposed to keep track of all that?

"Do these poisonous ones not grow all over like the yarrow and whats the other ones?" Wilder looks up from the plants to Oleander, gaze inquisitive before he looks back down to inspect the plants. He knew he had seen them before while hunting and navigating through different territories, but never had any idea they'd have been useful to him. How many times had he been cut, scraped, banged up and could've used these things to help him heal faster?
